FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions!

What kind of bike do I need?

Generally any BMX style bike with 20 inch wheels will work. It should be single speed and the frame should be in good condition. There must be a working rear brake.  You need a number plate.  Remove all reflectors (even those on the pedels), kickstands, chainguards, and freestyle pegs. Remember it's not the bike that wins races, it's the rider.

Is BMX riding safe?

Yes. The rules are specifically designed for the safety of the riders. Pads, helmets, long sleeves, long pants help protect the riders. There are adult volunteers at locations all around the track during the race. Everyone has the occasional scrape or bruise, but generally the only damage is to someone's ego.

What ages of riders race BMX?

The Pocket Rockets start as young as 4 or 5 and there a few racers out there with gray hair (or no hair). All racers are grouped by age and within each age class by ability (rookie, novice, expert, pro).

What should I bring to the track?

Your rider will need his or her NBL card, bike, helmet, shoes, pants, long sleeve shirt, parent or legal guardian. See the rules page.

Mom and Dad may wish to bring a lawn chair or blanket, sunscreen, a hat, pen, tools, pump, an extra bike tube, toys for siblings, money for the concession stand...

What do I need on the first day of registration?

The first time you show up at a race plan on bringing a photo copy of your birth certificate. You will also need to review the rules for what to wear and bicycle requirements. Be sure to show up early to allow time to complete paperwork and for your rider to practice and become familiar with the track. There are generally plenty of people to answer any questions you have.

How much does it cost?

MEMBERSHIP TO THE NATIONAL BICYCLE LEAGUE IS REQUIRED…

NBL Membership is $45.00 anually.  A trial membership is available for $30.00, which is good for 30 days then you can convert to a full membership for an additional $15.00

Race Fees (each time you come to race)

Points & Trophy $8.00 (usually for first timers)

Points ONLY  $6.00

What if it is raining?

Call the track phone 716-386-4269 for current status. Rider safety comes first. If there is lightning near the race will be temporarily delayed or cancelled. In the event of rain the track officials will evaluate the condition of the track and determine if race will be held or continue. The track is designed to drain quickly and portions are covered with tarps to keep the track ready for racing. If rain is in the forecast you may want to bring an umbrella, raincoat, towel and something to cover the seats in your vehicle for that ride home.
